Stroke and TIA mortality: A comparative analysis of five US states over an 8-year period.
The objective of this study was to examine the all-cause mortality and stroke- and transient ischemic attack (TIA)-specific mortality rates for state residents during 2005-2012 in the United States (US) to identify states that might be at highest risk for premature death. Using data from the 2005-2012 US Mortality File, stroke- and TIA-specific mortality rates were calculated for each state and each of the US Census Regions from 2005-2012. State-specific mean year-specific death rates were calculated for the entire US population and by three age groups (20-64, 65-74, and 75+ years). The 2005-2012 mean age-standardized stroke- and TIA-specific mortality rates in the US were 0.82 and 0.24 deaths per 100,000 population, respectively. The median age-standardized stroke- and TIA-specific mortality rates in the US were 0.81 and 0.24 deaths per 100,000 population, respectively. The 2005-2012 median age-specific stroke- and TIA-specific mortality rates in the US for each of the three age groups were as follows: 0.56, 0.54, and 0.41 deaths per 100,000 population, respectively. For the US overall population, the age-standardized stroke- and TIA-specific mortality rates ranged from 0.64 (Maine) to 0.99 (Louisiana) deaths per 100,000, and for the US overall population by region, the age-standardized stroke- and TIA-specific mortality rates ranged from 0.54 (New Jersey) to 1.19 (Maine) deaths per 100,000 population. State-level stroke and TIA mortality rates are high and vary substantially across the US population, with substantial variation in mortality rates by state.Q:
